There is a new favorite book at the Williams' household: "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs." While the repetition can get a bit wearying, there is simply no better children's book than this. The drawings are fabulous, and you have to love a book that teaches kids absurd humor. I loved this book as a kid, and when we first cracked it open for Abigail a few weeks ago, the pictures brought back so many memories! Baseball players snacking on pie, a mother running from giant doughnuts, a man lying squished under a huge hamburger, the houses made out of stale bread at the end ... Every child needs to learn very early on about irony. Hopefully we're on the successful path of instilling the proper appreciation of humor so she can later enjoy "The Princess Bride" and "Monty Python." Every mother's dream.
And aparently there's a sequel! Any one ever read "Pickles to Pittsburgh"? Based on the name alone, I'm intrigued.

I loved "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs." That was definitely one of my top favorite books when I was young. And, like you, I have a feeling I'll still enjoy it nowadays, too.
If you read the sequel, you must let us know!
Wow I haven't thought of "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs" in a long time. I still remember the giant donuts. Good times. I also recommend "The Giant Jam Sandwich." I seem to remember having to borrow that one from the dentist's office so that I could finish reading it. I was fascinated with the picture of the flying tractor. I also dearly loved the Amelia Bedelia series and one of my mother's favorites Epaminondas and His Auntie. Amelia Bedelia "puts out" the lights by hanging them on the clothes line and "draws" the curtains with a pen and paper. Epaminondas is told to watch how he "steps in those pies" cooling on the stoop, so he carefully places his foot in the middle of each one.
I think one of the most amazing thing when I buy children's books for my niece is the flood of nostalgia from reading those same books when I was a kid. Like Lucky Bob mentioning "The Giant Jam Sandwich." Out of nowhere, memories of that very book suddenly came to me, and I remembered how much I enjoyed it... including the flying tractor. The same happened when I found "But No Elephants" or some Richard Scarry book. As much as I loved my other toys when I was young, only seeing the books again has this sort of effect on me.
