I just watched "Everything is Illuminated" and am now thoroughly in love with that film. It was visually amazing, Ukraine is gorgeous. The soundtrack was a wonderful mix of Jewish klezmer and Ukrainian hip hop or ska or something and all sorts of other great tidbits. The character Alex was highly amusing, especially his take on American hip hop culture, and there was plenty of eclectic humor throughout. And I found the ending to be pleasantly unexpected -- though I guess you "pleasant" may not be the most apropriate word. I fully recommend it if you like slightly disjointed post-modern stories.
Of course, I'm now dying to know if Jonathan Safran Foer is really that bizarre.

Ooooh, I loved that movie. It was so good. It seemed like it was broken up into two parts — first half is really funny, last half is really serious. Great movie — and Elijah Wood was fabulous. But the Ukranian guy really stole the show. You know that he's in a band, right? I forget the name of it ... I'm pretty sure it was on the soundtrack, and it's really funky name. Borko Grogo or something weird like that.
Shana
The band is Gogol Bordello.
Haven't seen the film but I enjoyed the book a lot.
dunce
The music I really love on the soundtrack is by Leningrad, aparently a huge Russian band. I'm very tempted to finally figure out iTunes in order to get their songs. And thankfully, I don't speak Russian since their songs are supposed to be full of swearing and sex and vodka, etc. I can just continue to think it's cheerful, tuba-driven music and have ignorant fun.
Random and totally off topic, but too lazy to find your email address in my list and easier to find the bookmark leading to your page...
Did you know that They Might Be Giants have several sing along kids albums out? Including one about the ABC's? What's more disturbing is that in Itunes they've thrown some other albums by TMBG under kids albums that include songs like Damn Good Time and Bastard Wants to Hit Me...... I'm completely weirded out.
And the song "In the Middle", about crossing the street at the corner of the block, is oddly addictive...
I really enjoyed the book...although I had trouble sticking with it at first.
Good to hear a positive review of the film... I read a lot of pans when it came out. I must get Netflix!!!
