No Carolina sweetness

This weekend, it was colder in Charlotte than Fairbanks, Alaska.

The strawberries are gone. The peaches are gone. The mountain apples are gone. Not just the normal panic every spring from some small frost. Apparently, the crops are totally destroyed.

This is very, very sad. There is nothing better than a sweet South Carolina peach in the summertime.

Georgians, please let me know if there's any peachy hope left from your state!

ADJUSTED PROGNOSIS: Apparently, the strawberries weren't hit too badly. Small consolation.

No strawberries or peaches is a very bad thing. I'm sure we'll get more from out of state, but that's still going to raise prices. We'll just enjoy our strawberries on sale at Bi-Lo while we still can, I guess.

Yes we were hit bad. I heard a prognosis of 75-90% of the crop of apples and peaches were destroyed. The farmers that managed to cover their strawberries saw a small percentage damaged. I was at my parent's for Easter and I'll tell you. My gorgeous azaleas had all the exposed blooms killed. My red Norwegian Maple had most of the leaves knocked back if not killed outright, and my beautiful lavender flox took a beating. Luckily the Iris seem to have come through, and the pansies laughed at the pother flowers as they died. I'm going to post some pics when I get home to show some before and after.

What a dismal Easter it was, with the air so cold and the bounty of spring blackened by frost...
but strawberries are my favorite.
